Exploring the Majestic Beauty of Triglav National Park

Triglav national park is located on the north-west of Slovenia and occupies about 4% of the territory of the country. Originally it was established almost 100 years ago and at the moment remains the only one national park in Slovenia. When it comes to visiting of the park, there is a number of options how to do that and which part of the park to explore. For instance lake Bohinj or Vintgar gorge are located in the park either. But today we are going to explore the main part of the park, using old and narrow winding mountain roads to dive into the alpine beauty.

Lake Jasna

Our next destination is lake Jasna, located near a small town of Krajnska Gora. The lake is actually artificial and quite a portion of it appeared here only 30 years ago. But it is still a stunningly beautiful spot with crystal clear waters and reflection of the snowbound peaks in it. Let's have a short stroll around the lake to see its beauty from all the sides.

3. Ruska Cesta - Russian road

Vrsic, Russian chapel

From lake Jasna we are going to take an old mountain road, named Russian, to reach Vrsic mountain pass. The road was built during the times of WWI for military purposes. Austrian authorities used the labour of russian prisoners of war to build a new road and connect two valleys: of Sava and Soca rivers. Around 10000 of soldiers were used for that purpose and a number of them died here: mainly due to harsh winter conditions and avalanches. In 1917, to commemorate the memory of their fallen comrades, the soldiers built here a chapel in traditional russian style.

Soca river

Soca river

As many say, Soca river valley is at least one of the most beautiful river valleys in Europe. The river starts on the slopes of Julian alps and brings it waters (transparently emerald in the upper part and dark green in the lower) to the Adriatics in Italy, changing the name to Isonzo when cross the border. We are going to make a few stops to see two gorges of Soca - large and small. The river is famous and popular for activities: rafting, kayaking, canoeing and canyoning. These are widely offered in the neighbouring town of Bovec.

After a short drive through Italy (don't forget your passports or IDs) we are back to Slovenia and our next stop is Planica. It's a beautiful glacier alpine valley, which is known for its skiing resorts and especially ski-jumping hills. The first one was built here almost a hundred years ago, later rebuilt and modernised a few times. The modern one (letalnica - "to fly from") used to be the highest in the world for a very long time. It is the oldest and second highest among those which are used for world championships. It is also Planica where they set all the major historical records: a human jumped for 100 and 200 meters. The finals of the World Championship 2025 take part here.

After visiting Zelenci we are heading back.
